2007

Carried out an assessment of the security of a company and its personnel working in a high risk location in the Delta region of Nigeria.

2006

Carried out a H&S audit of a blast that had projected materials beyond the safe zone and damaged property.

2005

I worked in a bush environment in Liberia and made several working visits to the DRC Congo, these being high risk locations both with regard to random shootings and unexploded munitions.                 

2004

I produced a series of “PowerPoint” lectures on “A basic introduction to explosives” “Quarry blasting” and “An introduction to quarry blasting” various aspects of explosives use. I worked on a new manufacturing design for our range of steel explosives magazines. 

2003

In England, I employed, worked with and supervised, various British Forces trained EOD specialists to service a nine month contract for environmental remediation including, explosives ordnance clearance (EOC) and destruction of the munitions. Throughout this project large quantities of Second World War munitions were unearthed; the contract was completed without incident. I attended the 2003 Explo-World series of seminars, lectures; these were held at London and witnessed live firing demonstrations at Cranfield University, Ordnance Test and Evaluation Centre at Devizes. I produced detailed blasting specifications for a project in the UAE.

2002

I produced for the current British legislation a completely new set of exam papers for the examining body (EPIC) of the UK Health and Safety Executive. The exam papers covered the following subjects; Shotfiring, Blast design and Calculation, Environmental Control, Health, Safety and Legislation. Published a paper on the mechanism of explosives in rock breaking, this based on research carried out in the Falkland Islands. To ensure compatibility with the examinations I observed the Exchem course on environmental aspects of blasting and the Orica course on blast calculations. I also attended a lecture by Orica on the use of black powder.

2001

I attended 2001 Explo-World series of seminars, lectures and live firing demonstrations, these held at Tidworth and DSTL Environmental Sciences Department Porton Down England. I acted as advisor to Somerset Quarries Jamaica in developing their blasting programs.

2000

I presented a Doctoral Thesis on Surface Mining with specialist chapters on explosives and blasting techniques and was awarded a PhD. This project was based on research with explosives carried out in Zambia and the Falkland Islands. I was granted a European Certificate in Shotfiring. I sat an examination and was granted an explosives licence in Jamaica and carried out production blasting in Rugby’s Maypen Quarry, Jamaica.

1999

I supervised the security of personnel at a very high risk site in Jamaica, to and from the site and at the residence. I provided lectures and practical training to various personnel both private and government agencies. I designed and supervised the construction of a new explosives storage facility in Jamaica and advised the state licensing authorities on new blasting examinations. I blasted out a new quarry at Maypen Jamaica.

1998

I decommissioned a very heavily contaminated commercial explosives storage facility and various military explosives magazines in St Kitts. The nitroglycerine contamination was neutralised, deteriorated explosives, pyrotechnics, fireworks and military were destroyed. A new explosives storage facility was constructed to my design. I provided instruction to the local defence force and provided lectures on the use and safe keeping of explosives to various state security agencies. I attended the Explo-World symposium of seminars, lectures and demonstrations.

1997

I worked in Malawi for a UK Government Agency, the work included, coordinating, training and working with a British Forces trained Malawian EOD specialist. I used specialist-blasting techniques to cut roads into steep sided hills and I carried out weekly production blasts at two sites. I was elected as Fellow of the Institution of Mining Engineers.

1996

I attended the Nobel lectures “Explosives in the Service of Man”. I designed and carried out regular production blasts at three sites in Zambia and Malawi.

1995

Worked in Zambia on large production blasting projects at two sites and provided tuition in the theory and practice of blasting. Researched and practiced the means of using explosives to break and selectively move rock materials in specific grades. I provided tuition to the Zambian Inspectorate of Mines. I was granted a firearms certificate by the Government of Zambia. I was issued with a firearms permit in Zambia and purchased a Browning 320 semi-auto pistol.

1994

I attended a course in shotfiring held by The Quarry Products Training Council and was awarded a UK certificate in shotfiring. I was granted Private Pilots Licence. I designed and carried out weekly production blasts in Montserrat.

1993

I provided battlefield and other simulations on themed military exercises for the British Forces “Irish Guards” and the Montserrat Defence Force. These military exercises including training in drug interdiction and my setting of explosive devices for experience in clearance of buildings. I worked with extensively with explosives in Montserrat, and gave training to the police and various security agencies. I destroyed various pyrotechnics impounded at the local airport. I used explosives to cut roads into steep sided hills and carried out regular production blasts at the local quarry. I was issued with an Antiguan students pilots licence, elected as Fellow of the Institute of Explosives Engineers and granted the title of European Engineer.

1992

I provided battlefield simulations on themed military exercises including landing troops from the sea and attacking an airport. These exercises included the live firing of infantry weapons including 50mm mortars, small arms various explosives devices. I provided training on booby traps and IED. I designed and carried out blasting at the local quarry. I trained with SLR rifles and MP5 auto pistols.

1991

I recruited, organised and supervised ex Tanzanian Army soldiers to provide security at this very high risk area of south-western Tanzania. I provide instruction on the avoidance and dealing with various types of vehicle hijack and robbery scenarios. I carried out a technically difficult and high risk recovery operation of stolen equipment from the Mozambique-Tanzania border area. For this project, I had available a variety of weapons including, semi-auto pistols, revolvers, riot shot guns and rifles.

1990

While waiting for projects to develop in Mali and Sierra Leone I was temporarily employed in the UK as security operative at various entertainment venues. I provided and received tuition in pistol handling at Rochdale gun club. I managed a gold mining project in Tanzania and was granted a Blasting certificate, explosives storage permit and firearms permit by the Tanzanian government and carried out various blasts to excavate new roads.

1988

I sat a Viva Voce examination based on the general use of explosives to become a Chartered Engineer and was elected as a Fellow of the Institute of Quarrying. I carried out research for a quarry in St Kitts and provided tuition to several of their security agencies. I was issued with Zambian student pilot licence.

1987

I produced and presented a thesis on the use of explosives in large surface blasts this to enable acceptance as a Member of Institution of Mining Engineers. I was awarded the title of Eur Ing (European Engineer).

1986

I renewed the UK Explosives Act 1875 Certificate Form C issued by the Chief of Police for Greater Manchester as being a fit person to keep for the purpose of quarrying explosives and detonators.

1985

I was contracted from 1985 until 1990 by a leading consultancy practice, as an explosives and blasting consultant. The work was in Zambia and involved carrying out extremely large mining blasts (500,000 tonnes of rock with 50 tonnes of explosives). I provided lectures, taught explosives techniques, visited Kifironda explosives facility; I provided expertise on their products and advised local government on the use of explosives. I studied organic chemistry and worked with Zambian Government chemical plant, with regard to the explosive risks of their commercial fertilisers.

1984

I successful completed two courses of training in explosives, these being; Quarry Blasting Basic and Advanced Blasting Course. The courses were approved by the relevant authorities and provided by and certificated by Doncaster Metropolitan Institute of Higher Education.

1983

I worked in the Falkland Islands during which time I attended various lectures on mine awareness etc. I was in charge of all use of explosives used on the road between Mount Pleasant and Port Stanley and destroyed any munitions that were apparent during construction of the road. I designed and carried out blasts both on the road and at three quarries. During this time I experimented with and re-searched the mechanism of interacting shock waves from explosive charges.

1982

In the UK I de-commissioned an explosives store and destroyed the contents. I visited all the UK manufacturers of commercial explosives and carried out various production blasts. I received tuition from ICI on the theory and use of their magnadet detonators. I joined the World Jujitsu Federation.

1979-1981

Manchester Police issued me with a UK firearms certificate and I purchased a Browning semi-automatic pistol. I practiced pistol shooting at Oldham and Rochdale Police stations. I owned a quarry in the UK and was appointed quarry shotfirer.

1977

I became qualified as a BSAC, SCUBA diver and trained in the use of surface demand equipment and the operation of a barometric chamber.

1976 until 1980

Worked in various countries in the Middle East involved with quarrying and explosives, visited a new explosives factory in the UAE. I practised target shooting in the UAE with various small calibre sporting rifles. 

1975

I was contracted to Dhofar region of Oman (Salalah and Thumarit), as this was during a period of local hostilities I lived in a military zone with all the attendant risks, during this period I attended mine awareness lectures, and learned various other military skills. I practised shooting with Lee Enfield, FN and Kalashnikov weapons.

1970 to 1974

I learned shotfiring at various quarries in the UK and worked as assistant shotfirer. I decommissioned an explosives magazine at an abandoned brick quarry and destroyed the explosives.

1965

I was issued with a UK shotgun permit that I kept until 1990, I practised small bore rifle shooting with a BSA Martini target rifle.

1963 to 1965

During this period and until starting full time work in 1995, I was a member of the Air Training Corps, where I learned basic rifle shooting, and applied air navigation in Link trainers, defensive security and various military skills. The Air Training Corps is a voluntary youth organization supported by the Royal Air Force it is part of the Air Cadet Organization which also includes British Royal Air Force sections of the Combined Cadet Force.

Weapons

I have received training in the handling and use of a variety of small arms and am familiar with most types of small arms ammunition. At various times, I held a UK firearms certificate, a shotgun permit, a Zambian firearms permit and various Tanzanian firearms permits.

Pyrotechnics

From 1995 until 2004, I have produced a large fireworks display, using category 4 fireworks.
